How to Prepare a Wall for Projection

Decide whether the wall is good enough to remain a wall
Prepare a wall for projection by checking flatness, texture, color uniformity, sheen, damage, moisture, and the intended image size under projected light. Repair and smooth the surface, use compatible primer and matte finish, then test patterns before treating it as a permanent screen.
A wall can produce a satisfying image. It can also reveal every patch, roller edge, and tiny bump with the confidence of a museum spotlight.
Inspect with grazing and projected light
Darken the room and aim light across the wall from the projector direction. Mark dents, ridges, joint lines, nail pops, texture, cracks, stains, and glossy patches. Project a uniform field and grid to reveal waves and color variation.
Resolve active moisture, mold, structural movement, or unknown old coatings before sanding or painting. Hazardous materials in older buildings require qualified assessment and controls.
Mark the active image and border
Use screen-size planning and throw geometry to mark the exact active rectangle. Check outlets, switches, trim, doors, and speakers. Leave enough surrounding area for a dark border or visual separation if desired.

Create a flat surface
Repair holes and seams with products compatible with the wall system. Sand only with proper dust controls, eye and respiratory protection, and building-safe methods. Short-throw projectors exaggerate small waves, so a purpose-built tensioned screen may be more practical than repeated wall repair. Use a long straight reference and projected grid rather than judging flatness from across the room.
Choose finish by performance and compatibility
Use a smooth, low-sheen coating compatible with the substrate and primer. Gloss can create hotspots; heavy texture can scatter detail. Neutral white or gray selection should follow white-versus-gray testing with the intended projector and light.
Avoid invented paint recipes or color codes copied from another room. Projector spectrum, light output, wall base, application, and ambient light change the result. Test a removable sample board first.
Apply consistently
Follow paint maker preparation, ventilation, temperature, humidity, drying, recoat, and safety instructions. Use the recommended roller or spray process and maintain a wet edge to reduce visible bands. Keep electrical equipment, lenses, and screens protected from dust and overspray.
Allow full cure before cleaning or final evaluation. Do not project heat onto uncured coatings unless product instructions permit it.
Add a border carefully
A dark matte border can define the image edge and absorb minor overscan, but it should not conceal poor geometry. Use surface-compatible tape or framing and verify level and square.
Do not cover outlets, vents, detectors, or service access. Attached frames need suitable fasteners for the wall and load.
Compare with a real screen
Evaluate the finished wall against a screen-material sample using uniform fields, fine text, faces, pans, and dark scenes from every seat. Look for texture, sheen, color shift, and off-axis behavior.
If the wall keeps demanding repairs or the room needs acoustical transparency, masking, or directional light control, install a compatible screen. A painted wall is suitable only when it is genuinely smooth and stable. Stop sanding when the specified finish is achieved; unnecessary sanding adds dust exposure without improving a wall that needs repair or a separate screen.
