How to Focus and Align a Projector

Align the projector before chasing focus
Focus and align a projector by warming it as the manual directs, setting its native test pattern, physically squaring the lens to the screen, adjusting throw and optical controls, then focusing from center and checking every corner. Use minimal digital correction only after physical geometry is sound.
If the projector points diagonally at the wall, focus cannot make every corner sharp at the same setting.
Start with a stable installation
Confirm projector and screen are securely placed, level or oriented as specified, and within throw, offset, zoom, and lens-shift ranges. Never adjust an overhead mount unless the projector is safely supported and work is performed through qualified methods.
Keep hands and eyes away from the operating lens. Use remote or side controls and view from outside the beam. Epson's projector safety instructions warn that bright projector light can damage eyes and direct users not to look into the lens.
Use a grid and fine-detail pattern
Display the projector's internal grid when available because it removes source scaling from the first check. Add fine text, one-pixel patterns, circles, and edge markers from a trusted source after geometry.
Set digital keystone, corner correction, overscan, and sharpening to neutral or off where the manual permits. Save original values.
Square the image physically
Match the top and bottom widths by adjusting projector pitch, and match the side heights by adjusting yaw, while maintaining the required orientation. Correct rotation so horizontal lines parallel the screen frame.
Move the projector or screen rather than using zoom to solve an off-center trapezoid. Apply lens shift before keystone within the documented range.
Set image size optically
Use projector distance and optical zoom to fill the intended active area. Confirm throw-ratio placement and leave a small alignment margin around the screen border rather than spilling light onto the wall.
Do not use digital zoom when optical sizing and placement can do the job; digital scaling can reduce usable detail.
Focus in a repeatable order
Adjust center focus slowly in one direction, pass the sharpest point, then return. Check corners and edges. If the center sharpens while one side remains soft, recheck squareness, screen flatness, lens shift extremes, projector tilt, and optical quality.
Some lenses have normal focus variation. Evaluate at seating distance with real content while remaining outside the beam. Never approach the screen in a way that places your eyes in line with the operating lens.
Check source mapping
Switch to an external test pattern and confirm the projector reports the intended input resolution. Set aspect ratio and overscan for full edge visibility. Excess source or projector sharpening can create halos that look like false focus.
Proceed to basic picture calibration only after geometry and focus are stable.
Separate convergence from focus
Check convergence or color fringing separately from focus. Colored edges on a multi-panel projector may remain even when the lens is sharp, and digital panel alignment should follow the exact manual rather than being mistaken for a focus control.
Recheck after temperature and movement
Focus can shift as the projector warms or after a mount, shelf, zoom, or lens-shift adjustment. Recheck after a full warm-up. Adjust only hardware the projector manual identifies as user-adjustable, using the documented method. Do not tighten structural mount hardware yourself; route mount work to a qualified installer using the projector and mount manuals.
Document zoom, shift, focus, mount position, and pattern results. When the image is square, uniformly acceptable, and fully visible, stop. Do not continue adjusting fasteners or controls beyond their documented user range.
