Draw the audio and video path separately
Connect a projector to a sound system by choosing which device switches sources, which connection carries video, which carries audio, and which device controls volume. Then verify compatible ports, formats, copy protection, cable length, and return-channel behavior across every link.
“HDMI goes everywhere” is a topology, not yet a plan.
Choose one of three common paths

Use only devices designed for the signal. Passive or unverified splitters can cause handshake, resolution, or audio problems.
Verify every exact port
Check which HDMI input supports the intended resolution and frame rate, and which port supports ARC or eARC where applicable. Confirm receiver, soundbar, projector, source, and cables all support the desired video and audio formats.
Apply source-resolution matching. A receiver that handles the audio may still limit newer video features.
Understand return audio
ARC or eARC can send audio from the projector's apps or connected sources back through a designated HDMI port to a compatible sound system. HDMI Licensing Administrator's eARC overview describes eARC as an advance over ARC that returns source audio to an AVR or soundbar through HDMI and supports higher-bandwidth formats. Enable control and return-channel settings only as the manuals describe.
Supported formats vary. Optical or analog outputs may carry a smaller set of formats or fixed versus variable level. Never connect a speaker-level amplifier output to a line-level, headphone, or other low-level input. Confirm every port type and level in both device manuals before connection.
Plan for long projector runs
Verify cable type and certified length for the intended bandwidth and route. Active optical or powered cables can be directional and may need accessible power or service points. Test the full cable uncoiled through all modes before concealing it.
Use safe cable routing and qualified installation for in-wall or mains work.
Set control and volume safely
Choose one normal volume control and begin at low level. Disable or document HDMI control features that unexpectedly power or switch devices. Avoid running both projector speakers and the main system unless intentional and time-aligned.
Audio delay can align early sound to a late picture, but it cannot make already-late sound arrive sooner or make delayed video arrive earlier. Game modes may need separate settings.
Troubleshoot from the simplest chain
Connect one source directly to one display and one supported audio endpoint. Confirm picture and sound, then add receiver, switch, extractor, or return channel one device at a time.
Check selected input, mute, volume, output format, cable direction, handshake, and firmware instructions. Power-cycle only through documented sequences; do not hot-plug equipment when manuals prohibit it.
Label and document
Label both cable ends and record ports, modes, and supported formats. Keep ventilation around sound equipment and never place a receiver in projector exhaust.
For gaming, use the gaming signal guide to verify latency and audio sync. Document each adapter, port, supported format, and power state. If the route cannot be explained and verified from the device manuals, simplify it before further troubleshooting.
Projectors, mounts, screens, ladders, mains power, cables, lasers, lamps, heat, glass, batteries, and overhead installations can create shock, fire, fall, eye-injury, burn, or falling-object hazards.
